Bacon Cinnamon Rolls

I stumbled across this recipe on another blog and I had to share it.  A great combination of salty and sweet flavors.  And an easy breakfast to make!

All you need is a tube of Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls from the refrigerator section of your grocery store and some bacon!

Fry up the bacon, but don't cook it all the way.  You don't want it crispy, otherwise you won't be able to roll it up with the cinnamon rolls.  After you cook up the bacon, put it on a plate with paper towels to cool and soak up the grease.

Next, take some parchment paper and unroll the cinnamon rolls.  I used 2 bacon strips per roll.  Lay them on top of the cinnamon roll and roll them back up.  Once you have bacon'd up your rolls place them in a pan and bake according to the directions on the package of rolls.

Take out of oven, frost, and enjoy!!

Oink!

Unfrosted

Frosted Piggyness

Close-up of frosted bacon....Oink!

Nom nom nom!!!

Was definitely worth the extra calories!

Felt Babies!!

I've been playing around with different mediums recently and have discovered that I love felt!  Who would have thought!  Anyways, the first creations I made with felt were rolled felt flowers.  I made them into magnets and keychains.  You wouldn't think a felt keychain would hold up, but it is surprisingly very durable and strong!

Here are the magnets I made.

And some of the keychains...

Next I went on to making something a little more complex.  I call these my felt babies.  They take a lot of patience to make and a lot of time.  I think I can make 2 in about 4 hours.  I don't know if that's good or not....maybe I am just slow with felt!

Owl

Bird

Wiener Dog

Penguin

All the felt babies standing in a row!

I think next I will make some type of felt hair accessory.  I bought the pins for it, just need to figure out how I'm gonna do it now!

Update on the Etsy shop:  It is going S....L....O....W!  Like I said, I anticipated this, but man is it frustrating.  16 products listed and nothing purchased yet.  However I do have many page views and people have "favorited" some of my items.  So at least I know people are looking.  Just wish I could get them to BUY!

Until next time,

Introducing....Handmade Bethy!!

Recently I started an Etsy shop and I am trying to spread the word!  So far it's been kind of a slow start, but I sort of expected that.  But I'm gonna push forward and stick with it.  This is something I REALLY want to do and want to be successful at!

I named my store Handmade Bethy (no explanation needed, I'm sure)  I've got about 12 items listed now and plan on added much more as I have the time to create and post.

So check it out and do some shopping!  :-)

MOMmade Party

This past Thursday my friend, Sunne, organized an amazing craft fair/show/sale event at the Coffee Hound in Bettendorf.  It was from 6-9pm on a Thursday night and the turnout was pretty good!  I think there was a total of 13 different vendors selling their homemade items or passing out information on their services, like my friend Cari who was handing out information on being a doula and the services that she provides.

The name MOMmade suggests that these are just mom's selling their goodies.....which is mostly true, except for the fact that I was there and I am not a mom.  Thankfully Sunne still let me come! :-)  I made 9 sets of coasters, several bottle cap magnets, and 6 microwave heat wraps to sell.  I was extremely nervous about selling my items.  For some reason I thought people would think what I made was stupid, or tacky, or not well made.  The feedback I got was the complete opposite and it's fueled me to continue my crafting for the next event.  The fact that my boyfriend, Ryan, came to the event and stayed the entire time was also a great help with easing my nerves!   I think Sunne plans to have the MOMmade party once a month at the Coffee Hound!

Doing this event has inspired me to look into starting an etsy.com shop.  I haven't looked into the details on it yet, but I plan to very soon!  How great would it be to make your hobby and what you love to do into something profitable!

Unfortunately I was too focused on manning my table that I didn't get a lot of photos, but I did get a couple of the table that Sunne and I shared.

My side of the table.

Sunne's side of the table.  She crocheted cute headbands for adults, toddlers/infants, and newborns!  They are super cute!

Can't wait for the next one!!

My First Quilled Creation!!

I've found a new crafting medium!!  Quilling!  I remember seeing these things in my house growing up.  I'm pretty sure my mom either did them or a relative did....either way I wish I would have hung on to them!  So now I will just have to make my own!

I bought some basic supplies at Hobby Lobby.  A quilling tool and tweezers.  Glue and paper strips.  All rather inexpensive too.  I think I spent $15 total.  I really just wanted to get the basics to see if I would even like it first.  It is definitely not a quick and easy craft to do.  Takes some time and dedication on your part and steady hands.

So here is my first creation.....a cute little owl!

It's probably not the best out there but I am pretty impressed with it!  Now I will have to make him some friends!

Maybe someday I will be able to make something like these!

Kitties need blankets too!

My cat and my brother's cat love making the top of the couches their personal napping spots and I have had to deal with the enormous amount of cat hair buildup forever....well no more!

I made both of them their own personal kitty blanket to put on their sleeping spot so that when it gets full of hair I can just throw it in the wash!

Very easy, just one of those fleece tie blankets (but kitty-sized)!

Toonces was already in love before I even started making it!

And the finished product, with kitty...

**My brother's cat not pictured.....I guess he wasn't sleepy at the time I was taking the pictures.

By the way, I wrote this blog with a cat on my lap the entire time.

This years Christmas gifts....FINALLY

So it's only been a little over 3 weeks since Christmas has come and gone but better late than never!  A new thing I have started doing the past couple of years is making all of my Christmas presents for the majority of my family and friends.  So here is what I did this year!

Bottle Cap Magnets!

This isn't the first time I've used this idea before, but this time I flipped the caps over and cut out images and pasted them inside.  Some pretty scrapbook paper and a little glue will go a long way! I punched them out with an inch circle punch which was the perfect size for the bottle cap.  Sadly, I am not the first to come up with this cool idea.  I came across similar magnets at Borders and another store (can't remember where though).  But I like to think mine are the best and most unique!

Here are a few more pics...

Microwave Heat Wraps!

These things are amazing and so easy to make!  If you just want a simple one and don't care what it looks like all you need is a tube sock.  To make it pretty though, I put a softer, more colorful sock on the outside and just tied the top.  This way you can remove the outer sock and machine wash it when you need to.  To make the inside, I mixed rice and cut open a couple packets of herbal tea and mixed together, then sewed the tube sock shut.  When you microwave the heat wrap it's best to place a cup of water in with it or spritz it with some water.  This way it maintains the moisture and your heat wrap will last longer!

Bathroom Tile Coasters!

This gift I am most proud of this year!  It took a while, but the result was well worth it!

I took plain white ceramic bathroom tiles (Home Depot, Lowes, etc.) and spray painted them black.  Several coats.
Let them dry overnight.
I then printed off images just with my printer at home and used spay adhesive to glue them to the tiles.
Let them dry overnight.
Next, I sprayed them with a a clear glossy lacquer.  Used mainly for models.  Several coats.
Let them dry overnight.

Next, I cut out adhesive felt pieces to fit the bottom of the tiles and attached them.

And that's it!
Here are some more pictures of the finished product.

They really work great!  Heavy enough not to slide around or stick to your cup and they don't absorb the moisture like the paper/cardboard ones.  I'm definitely going to be making more of these in the future!

Now it's time to start thinking about next years Christmas gifts!!

Till next time,

Christmas Baking Overkill!

For some reason I got it in my mind that I should bake a crapload of cookies.  I really don't know why, because I won't be the one eating them all, but I guess I just wanted to try some new recipes.  I definitely learned a few things along the way.  Like the fact that I CANNOT make fudge and that you shouldn't add food coloring to almond bark.  So needless to say, it was an experience.

So here are the recipes I tried....

The traditional almond bark covered pretzel.  This is where I went wrong.  I thought it would be cute if I colored the almond bark green, since the pretzels are in the shape of a tree.  Big mistake.  Apparently adding any kind of liquid or moisture to the already melted almond bark causes it to solidify and become grainy and gross.  I would have known this if I had read the back of the package.  Good thing I bought two packages then.

Here is the final product.  I'm not going to bother with the recipe, everyone knows how to make these.

Next...

Mini Candy Cookies

I got this recipe from Pioneer Women's website.  I don't know if you can really call it a recipe though.  But here it is.

Ingredients
  • Refrigerator Cookie Dough
  • Miniature Chocolate Candies
Slice the cookie dough into 1 to 1 ½ inch slices. Lay the slices on their side and cut them into quarters. Place each quarter into a greased mini-muffin tin. Peel the wrapper from as many pieces of candy as cookies you’re going to make.

Bake the cookie dough in a 350-degree oven for just a few minutes, about 6 to 8 at the most. You’ll want to take them out just when they start to turn golden.

Almost as soon as you pull the warm cookies from the oven, begin lightly pressing one piece of candy into each cookie. The warmer the cookies, the better. They’ll grab onto the pieces of candy and work their magic, making the candy nice and soft and melty. And ridiculous.

When they’re all done, carefully remove from muffin tins with a spoon.

These are pretty tasty.  How can they not be though, right?  I used peanut butter and chocolate chip cookie dough and mini Reese's peanut butter cups, Hershey's kisses, and Hershey's mini candy bars (just cut them in half)

YUM!!!

Next was another recipe from the wonderful Pioneer Woman.  I have my Aunt to thank for introducing me to her.  Amazing!  Here is her website if you want to check it out for yourself.  And I highly recommend that you do!

Toffee Squares

These were my favorite out of everything I made I think.  They aren't too overpowered with "sweet" so you don't feel sick after you eat one.....or two or three....
Here's the recipe.

Ingredients
  • 2 sticks Butter
  • 1 cup Packed Brown Sugar
  • 1 whole Egg
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla
  • 2 cups All-purpose Flour
  • 2 cups Chocolate Chips (milk Or Semi-sweet)
  • ¾ cups Finely Chopped Pecans
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Cream butter and brown sugar until fluffy. Add egg, vanilla, and flour and mix until combined. Spread on cookie sheet with an offset spatula until thin. Bake for 15 minutes, or until golden. Remove pan from oven and sprinkle on chocolate chips. Return to oven for 1 minute. Remove from oven and spread chocolate thinly over the cookie layer.

Sprinkle with chopped pecans. Cut into squares.

Next up...

Fudge...

Yeah, well I'll just show you guys my disaster and then we can move on.

Eggnog Fudge

This looks pretty tasty doesn't it?!  Like you could just slice it up and have a piece of this melt in your mouth!  Not exactly....I took it out of the pan and attempted to cut it up.  Key word being "attempted."  It was solid as a brick and I was pretty sure the butcher knife I was using was about to snap in two.  I did try a little shaving I got off of it and it was pretty good....but really sweet.  Almost too sweet.  So this brick of eggnog went right in the trash.  But here is the recipe anyways in case anyone is better at making fudge than I am.

Ingredients
  • 1/8 cup butter, chilled
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 1 cup eggnog
  • 6 ounces white chocolate chips
  • 1 1/2 cup mini-marshmallows
  • 1 cup almonds, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Line a 9 x 9-inch cake pan with aluminum foil and set aside. Spray the sides of a large saucepan with butter-flavor non-stick spray. Add the eggnog and sugar, and bring to a rolling boil over medium to medium-high heat, stirring constantly. Boil for two full minutes. Fold in the marshmallows, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Bring back to a rolling boil for another 6 minutes, stirring constantly. The mixture will start to turn brown, which is normal, but if you see brown flakes in the mixture then turn down the heat a little. Remove from heat and add the butter, chips, and nuts. Stir until thoroughly mixed or until the mixture starts to lose its glossy appearance. Pour into prepared pan. Cool at room temperature. Remove from pan, remove foil, cut into 1-inch squares.

Fantasy Fudge

Now this one doesn't look so great, I will admit it.  But it tasted good!  But then again it didn't have the texture that fudge is supposed to have, so I will consider this one a failure as well.  This recipe you can find on the back of the Kraft Marshmallow Creme jar.  But here it is anyways.

Ingredients
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup margarine
  • 2/3 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 12-oz. (340 g) package semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 7-oz. (198 g) jar Kraft Marshmallow creme
  • 1 cup chopped nuts
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Combine sugar, margarine and milk in heavy 2-1/2 quart saucepan; bring to full rolling bail, stirring constantly. Continue boiling 5 minutes over medium heat, stirring. Remove from heat, stir in chocolate till melted. Add marshmallow creme, nuts & vanilla beat till blended. Pour into greased 13 x 9-inch baking pan. Let cool and cut into 1-inch squares.

Now it's time for some peanut butter!

Peanut Butter Cornflake Drops

WARNING: If you have dentures, don't eat these!  These puppies are tough and chewy, but goooood!  Here's the recipe.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup white corn syrup
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup crunchy peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup margarine
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 to 4 cups cornflake cereal
Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. In a large saucepan stir together corn syrup, sugar, peanut butter, margarine and vanilla. Bring to a rolling boil, stirring constantly. Allow to boil for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in cornflakes. Drop by tablespoon onto prepared baking sheet. Allow to cool and set.

Last but not least...

Chocolate Peanut Butter Crispy Balls

I don't have a picture of these.  I guess I got too excited towards the end of my baking that I forgot to take one, or I was on a sugar high.  I'm not sure...  Anyways, my brother said he liked these the best, and I won't disagree, they are really good.

Ingredients
  • 1 (18 ounce size) jar of peanut butter
  • 2 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
In a double boiler over low heat, melt chocolate and set aside. In a medium sized bowl, combine all other ingredients. Blend well until mixture forms a dough. Roll into 1-inch balls. Using a toothpick or fork, dip the balls into the chocolate until well coated. Place onto a cookie sheet lined with wax paper. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

I found it was easiest to use a fork to coat the balls.  If you use a toothpick they just kinda fall apart.  Maybe that was just me though.  Also, if you don't have a double boiler (like me)  you can use a large sauce pan, fill it with about 1-1/2" of water, then place a glass bowl on the top (one that fits pretty well to the size of your pan.)  Don't let the bottom of the glass bowl touch the water.  Then you can just place the chocolate chips in the glass bowl and they will melt away!

Well that's it!  Now I have an absurd amount of cookies in my freezer and I am going to go lay on the couch so I can recover from this sugar coma I am in right now.

Till next time...
